Frequently Asked Questions

How did this lodge and park get started?

The Hiawatha Club of Pipestone had presented The Song Of Hiawatha Pageant for 60 years on a 44 acre parcel adjoining the Pipestone National Monument and the City of Pipestone. Lourie Ness the mayor at that time worked with the Hiawatha Club and purchased the 44 acre parcel to designated as a park.

A citizens group formed The Pipestone Area Community Foundation (pipestonefoundation.com) and with the assistance of Southwest Initiative Foundation (swifoundation.org) raised over $500.000 to build the current lodge.

One of the many uses recommended for the property was to have a annual holiday light show, thus the Lights at the Lodge display.

The sign reads 'Hiawatha Parlant Park & Hiawatha Lodge 805 3rd Ave NW,' with Christmas lights and holiday decorations including trees and reindeer in the background at night.
